Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "NGC 3717: A Nearly Sideways Spiral Galaxy." Most spiral galaxies consist of a flat, rotating disk containing stars, gas and dust, and a central concentration of stars known as the bulge. NGC 3717 is no exception, and the central glow viewed here is from the collection of older stars in its bulge. The galaxy spans about 100,000 light years and lies approximately 60 million light years away toward the constellation Hydra.
