APOD: 2019 November 2 - Inside the Flame Nebula

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Inside the Flame Nebula." How do you get "inside" a nebula? One way is to render the image in infrared and x-ray. And that's exactly what today's APOD has for us: a glimpse inside the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) using available infrared and x-ray data. Located near Orion's Belt some 1,400 light years away, Alnitak (the easternmost star in Orion's Belt) shines energetic ultraviolet light into NGC 2024 and this knocks electrons away from the great clouds of hydrogen gas that reside there. We can see the Flame Nebula due to the ionized hydrogen gas that is present.

You probably recognize the Horsehead Nebula in this photo. Now visit today's APOD and swipe your cursor over the image (or click on it) to see the Flame Nebula in infrared and x-ray. This reveals several newly formed stars, all 200,000 to 1.5 million years young. Data was collected by the Spitzer and Chadra Space Telescopes.

Good Saturday morning Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!!! I wrote a response on my smartphone earlier this morning, but POOF, It disappeared!!! Well, that is okay because I am not trying to impress anyone (Pun intended, re; today's Topic)! I want simply to expand on your already outstanding daily APOD, which will add to, the understanding and knowledge of Space and everything that is out there in the Cosmos!

In my short research this morning, I did come across a very good Video on NGC 2024 and the Flame Nebula and I share that with all of your followers today in hopes that it will help all understand just a little bit more about space... This video is from NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory... Enjoy!
