APOD: 2022 November 22 - A Double Star Cluster in Perseus

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the November 22nd edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "A Double Star Cluster in Perseus." These two star clusters are found in the northern constellation Perseus. Also known as h (NGC 869, right) and chi (NGC 884, left) Persei, they both lie about 7,000 light years from Earth and are readily seen with binoculars.
The Greek astronomer, geographer, and mathematician Hipparchus (c. 190 BC - c. 120 BC) is believed to have first cataloged these 'nebulousities' in c. 130 BC. Who was Hipparchus? In the first volume of his 1817 book 'A History of Astronomy,' Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre dubbed him the "father of astronomy." Why?
Hipparchus developed the first quantitative models for the motion of the Sun and Moon. This led to his realization of the "precession of the equinoxes" (the seasonal equinoxes move westward along the plane of the Earth's orbit about the Sun relative to the fixed stars, opposite to the yearly motion of the Sun observed from Earth). Hipparchus developed trigonometry and populated the first trigonometric tables for navigation, science, and engineering. Some other reputed achievements include compilation of the first comprehensive star catalog in the western world, prediction of solar and lunar eclipses, and possibly the invention of the astrolabe.

APOD "Explanation: Few star clusters are this close to each other. Visible to the unaided eye from dark sky areas, it was cataloged in 130 BC by Greek astronomer Hipparchus. Some 7,000 light-years away, this pair of open star clusters is also an easy binocular target, a striking starfield in the northern constellation of the mythical Greek hero Perseus. Now known as h and chi Persei, or NGC 869 (above right) and NGC 884, the clusters themselves are separated by only a few hundred light-years and contain stars much younger and hotter than the Sun. In addition to being physically close together, the clusters' ages based on their individual stars are similar - evidence that both clusters were likely a product of the same star-forming region."
