APOD: 2022 November 20 - Airglow Ripples over Tibet

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the November 20th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Airglow Ripples over Tibet." Airglow was known to the ancient Greeks (Socrates and Pliny called it 'chasmata'), but the phenomenon was first identified by the Swedish Anders Ångström in 1868.
Electromagnetic energy is emitted during certain chemical reactions, and the first detailed study of airglow was conducted in 1901 by Canadian Simon Newcomb. Nitrogen and oxygen are dissociated by sunlight to produce nitric oxide (NO). This reaction releases a photon (e.g. airglow). Other contributors to airglow are the hydroxyl radical (OH), atomic oxygen (O), atomic sodium (Na), and atomic lithium (Li).
Now take another look at today's APOD (first appearing in September 2014). The notes indicate the photo was taken the previous April after a thunderstorm over Bangladesh. That had to be one whale of a thunderstorm.

APOD "Explanation: Why would the sky look like a giant target? Airglow. Following a giant thunderstorm over Bangladesh in late April, giant circular ripples of glowing air appeared over Tibet, China, as pictured here. The unusual pattern is created by atmospheric gravity waves, waves of alternating air pressure that can grow with height as the air thins, in this case about 90-kilometers up. Unlike auroras powered by collisions with energetic charged particles and seen at high latitudes, airglow is due to chemiluminescence, the production of light in a chemical reaction. More typically seen near the horizon, airglow keeps the night sky from ever being completely dark."

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price Thanks for the description and explanation about airglow. It is something I have never know about or seen. It's really lovely. We can only imagine what people in earlier times must have thought seeing it, before modern times when we now have an understanding of it.
