Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "The Fainting of Betelgeuse." We enjoy today a night perspective of the skies near Maj Robert Thornton's home. Orion is shown rising through a backdrop of leafless trees; his belt is near center. That would make Betelgeuse one of the brighter yellow star to the left of the top star in the belt. As was mentioned yesterday, Betelgeuse is now close to its faintest since photometric measurements began in 1926/27. The star is known to be a variable star, changing its brightness in multiple cycles with short and long term periods of hundreds of days to many years.

Betelgeuse will have a short life (for a star) and is near the end of it. There is a chance that we might get to see a supernova that would be visible during the day in our lifetime.

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price the only time I got to see it was when I went to sea. The view from Catalina Island, just 26 miles offshore of Los Angeles is spectacular. Sadly, I had to quit sailing when I developed Meniere's Disease which adversity affects balance.
