Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Hoags Object: A Nearly Perfect Ring Galaxy." Found about 600 million light years away in the constellation Serpens (The Serpent) is Hoags Object, a ring galaxy some 100,000 light years across. What causes this type of formation? One explanation suggests that when a smaller galaxy passes through a larger object, the gravitational compression of dust and gas sets off a burst of star formation that ripples away from the point of impact much like that of a pebble being dropped into a pond. Hoags Object was first reported in 1950 by astronomer Arthur Hoag.
