APOD: 2019 October 31 - The Ghostly Veil Nebula

Good morning and Happy Halloween, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "The Ghostly Veil Nebula." Spanning an area in the sky almost six times the size of a full Moon, the Veil Nebula is near the constellation Cygnus (The Swan). The nebula is a large supernova remnant, an expanding cloud born of the death explosion of a massive star. Two seasonal components of the Veil Nebula are the Witch's Broom (NGC 6960, below and right of center) and the spectral IC 1340 (top left). Until a few years ago, astronomers thought the Veil Nebula was over 2500 light years distant. In 1999, astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope estimated a much closer distance of only 1470 light years. The supernova occurred 5,000-8,000 years ago.
