APOD: 2023 January 3 – Kembles Cascade of Stars

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to a 'three-fer" edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Kemble's Cascade of Stars." In 1980, Franciscan Father Lucian Kemble sent a drawing to his friend Walter Houston (at Sky and Telescope Magazine) describing "...a beautiful cascade of faint stars tumbling from the northeast down to the open cluster NGC 1502." That open cluster (NGC 1502) is called the Jolly Roger Cluster, and is shown in the top left of this image.
So while we are seeing (perhaps) a photographic reverse of Kemble's Cascade from how Father Kemble originally described it, I think the results are just as delightful. Kemble's Cascade is an asterism found in the constellation Camelopardalis (The Giraffe). The Jolly Roger Cluster (NGC 1502) lies about 3.500 light years from Earth, and is a open cluster of approximately 60 stars discovered by William Herschel on November 3, 1787. Depending on how you are oriented, Kemble's Cascade appears to flow into (or in this case, down from) NGC 1502.

APOD 'Explanation: This line of stars is real. A little too faint to see with the unaided eye, Kemble’s Cascade of stars inspires awe when seen with binoculars. Like the Big Dipper though, Kemble’s Cascade is an asterism, not a constellation. The asterism is visible in the northern sky toward the long-necked constellation of the Giraffe (Camelopardalis). This string of about 20 unrelated stars, each of similar brightness, spans over five times the angular width of the full moon. Stretching diagonally from the upper left to the lower right, Kemble's Cascade was popularized last century by astronomy enthusiast Lucian Kemble. The bright object near the top left of the image is the relatively compact Jolly Roger open cluster of stars, officially designated as NGC 1502."
