APOD: 2020 April 10 - Full Moon of Spring

Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Full Moon of Spring." In order to understand what time of year it is, Native Americans endowed each full moon with a name that evokes imagery from the season in which it occurs. For example, the Harvest Moon occurs in our month of September. Colonial Americans learned of this practice, and adopted these names as well. According to Farmer's Almanac, April's Pink Moon is specifically named after the annual reappearance of wild ground phlox, marking the end of winter. These flowers drape over the newly green grass like a quilt of pink petals and its no wonder they inspired the name of the April moon. I don't know if the photographer intentionally placed a pink haze around the Moon here, but I like the effect nonetheless.

"Explanation: From home this Full Moon looked bright. Around our fair planet it rose as the Sun set on April 7/8, the first Full Moon after the vernal equinox and the start of northern hemisphere spring. April's full lunar phase was also near perigee, the closest point in the Moon's elliptical orbit. In fact, it was nearer perigee than any other Full Moon of 2020 making it the brightest Full Moon of the year. To create the visual experience a range of exposures was blended to capture the emerging foreground foliage and bright lunar disk. The hopeful image of spring was recorded from a home garden in skies over Chongqing, China."
