Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "M77: Spiral Galaxy with an Active Center." Edwin Hubble invented a classification scheme for galaxies in 1926: 1) Elliptical galaxies have smooth, featureless light distributions and appear as ellipses in images. 2) Spiral galaxies consist of a flattened disk, with stars forming a spiral structure, active star formation, and a central concentration of stars known as the bulge. 3) Lenticular galaxies consist of a bright central bulge surrounded by an extended, disk-like structure but have no visible spiral structure and are not actively forming stars.
M77 is likely considered a classic spiral galaxy. Also known as NGC 1068, it lies 17 million light years away in the constellation Cetus (the Sea Monster). M77 has an active center, which means it has a much higher than normal luminosity over some portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (radio, microwave, infrared, optical, ultra-violet, X-ray and gamma ray wavebands) that is not produced by stars. The likely suspect is a supermassive black hole.
