APOD: 2024 December 30 – M27: The Dumbbell Nebula

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for December 30, 2024.
We return to the skies today with Messier 27 (M27). The nebula is a popular APOD feature, and this re-interpretation is a worthy addition to the archives. I say re-interpretation due to the color palette chosen by the astrophotographer: sulfur (red), hydrogen (green), and oxygen (blue). Hydrogen is often shown in red, but to do so in this case would limit the ability to separate the presence of both hydrogen (wavelength 656 nm) and sulfur (wavelength 670 nm) in the resultant image.
The Dumbbell Nebula was first discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. It lies about 1,000 light years away in the constellation Vulpecula (The Fox), located between the constellations Cygnus (The Swan) and Aquila (The Eagle).
