APOD: 2022 November 1 - NGC 6357: The Lobster Nebula

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the November 1st edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "NGC 6357: The Lobster Nebula." We find this lobster some 8,000 light years away in the constellation Scorpius (The Scorpion). This image was captured by the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) mounted on the 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (in Chilé).
A 'dark energy camera' sounded interesting, so I checked out one of the links on today's APOD page. The more experienced photographers here at RP likely knows what a charged coupled device (CCD) is...but I didn't. A CCD a transistorized light sensor on an integrated circuit. It manipulates electrical signals to produce some kind of output. In other words, a CCD is a digital camera.
DECam has 74 CCDs (62 for science, and 12 for guiding/focus). According to the DECam website, that is a potential 570 megapixels of data. Which (to me) helps explain the level of detail we can see in the Lobster Nebula. As we have seen elsewhere, the red hue dominates here due to the presence of ionized hydrogen gas. You can almost hear the interstellar winds blowing.

Explanation: Why is the Lobster Nebula forming some of the most massive stars known? No one is yet sure. Cataloged as NGC 6357, the Lobster Nebula houses the open star cluster Pismis 24 near its center -- a home to unusually bright and massive stars. The overall red glow near the inner star forming region results from the emission of ionized hydrogen gas. The surrounding nebula, featured here, holds a complex tapestry of gas, dark dust, stars still forming, and newly born stars. The intricate patterns are caused by complex interactions between interstellar winds, radiation pressures, magnetic fields, and gravity. The image was taken with DOE's Dark Energy Camera on the 4-meter Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. NGC 6357 spans about 400 light years and lies about 8,000 light years away toward the constellation of the Scorpion.
