APOD: 2021 July 30 - Mimas in Saturnlight

Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Mimas in Saturnlight." The Cassini spacecraft was active in space for nearly 20 years, with 13 years spent orbiting Saturn and studying the planet and its system after entering orbit on July 1, 2004 (the mission ended in 2017). As a result, the wealth of information returned by Cassini to Earth is still being studied. APOD last visited Mimas on May 31st of this year, where the focus was on the impact that produced the 130km-wide Herschel Crater. If there were a crater of an equivalent scale on Earth (in relative size) it would be over 4,000 km (2,500 mi) in diameter, wider than Australia. This view of Mimas is, shall we say, a bit more peaceful.

APOD frequently talks about the effect of 'Earthshine' when discussing the visible glow of the dark side of our Moon due to reflected sunlight from Earth. Here, along with a sunlit crescent (just like we see with our own Moon) we see the effects of 'Saturnlight', or the reflected light from the giant planet. "Explanation: Peering from the shadows, the Saturn-facing hemisphere of Mimas lies in near darkness alongside a dramatic sunlit crescent. The mosaic was captured near the Cassini spacecraft's final close approach on January 30, 2017. Cassini's camera was pointed in a nearly sunward direction only 45,000 kilometers from Mimas. The result is one of the highest resolution views of the icy, crater-pocked, 400 kilometer diameter moon. An enhanced version better reveals the Saturn-facing hemisphere of the synchronously rotating moon lit by sunlight reflected from Saturn itself.
