Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is titled "Mammatus Clouds over Nebraska." Mammatus clouds are formed by cold air sinking down to form the pockets contrary to the puffs of clouds rising through the convection of warm air. If you think this is an odd APOD for December, you could be right...mammatus clouds are often associated with the turbulent air near a summer thunderstorm. That's exactly when this picture was reportedly taken: June 2004.
