Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Looking Sideways from the Parker Solar Probe." NASA's Parker Solar Probe (PSP) launched aboard a Delta IV-Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, Aug. 12, 2018. The spacecraft, about the size of a small car, will be the first-ever mission to "touch" the Sun. Over a series of successive orbits, It will travel directly into the Sun's atmosphere about 4 million miles from the surface.
This 0:14 video shows the view looking sideways from behind PSP's Sun shield during its first approach to the Sun a year ago -- to about half the orbit of Mercury. The time-lapse clip (taken over nine days) was released during a news conference held in November. The waving solar corona is visible on the far left, with stars, planets, and even the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy streaming by in the background as the PSP orbits the Sun.
