APOD: 2019 December 5 - Spiral Galaxy NGC 6744

Good morning, Rallypoint. We head to the Southern Hemisphere today to the constellation Pavo (the Peacock), one of the four "Southern Birds." In Pavo we see the spiral nebula NGC 6744, a galaxy similar to our own Milky Way but nearly twice as large. Note the small companion galaxy NGC 6744A at the lower right, analogous to the Large Magellanic Cloud. The European Southern Observatory (ESO) captured this image from exposures taken through four different filters that passed blue, yellow-green, red light, and the glow coming from hydrogen gas. These are shown in this picture as blue, green, orange and red, respectively. NGC 6744 lies approximately 30,000,000 light years away.

Good early Thursday afternoon Maj William W. 'Bill' Price and thank you for this spectacular image of NGC 6744... As I searched for a decent video of this galaxy, I came across one, which captured my eyes and It is very very good and shows some detail description of NGC 6744 along with some great video...from Hubble...It also shows several other galaxies for comparison... SSG Donald H "Don" Bates - Size is relative, but because using either Miles or Kilometers is too small for measuring distances in space so scientists created a number of aids to help them comprehend those distances... Some of those are as follow:
AU = Astronomical Unit - meaning the distance from the Sun to the Earth is one AU and equates to 96 Million Miles. That is the basic measurement within our solar system...
Outside of that, their are terms like light year (distance light travels in one earth year.
Parsec, 3.26156 Light Years; GigaParsecs - 1 gigaparsec = 109 parsecs and so on....
