Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "M27: The Dumbbell Nebula." M27 is a planetary nebula first discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. A planetary nebula is a nebula formed of ionized gases that emit light of various wavelengths. These gases form an expanding planet-like shell around stars late in their lives. Planetary nebulae likely play a crucial role in the chemical evolution of the Milky Way by expelling elements into the interstellar medium from stars where those elements were created.
As shown in today's image, M27 is a source of hydrogen (red) and oxygen (blue). The Dumbbell Nebula is located approximately 1,000 light years away in the constellation Vulpecula (the Fox).
