Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "NGC 6995: The Bat Nebula." The reds and hues of blue indicate the presence of hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen gas. This close-up of the eastern portion of the Veil Nebula is located in the constellation Cygnus. The Veil Nebula is a supernova remnant believed to have exploded about 8,000 years ago. The distance to the nebula is not precisely known, but data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) telescope supports a distance of about 1,470 light-years. FUSE was launched in 1999.
