Victory for Veterans Foundation presents another Sunday evening of “Sharing and Caring” through Warriors for Life (WFL) Virtual Group Support Community Services. Join your host COL (Ret) Mikel Burroughs this evening for some awesome peer-to-peer support.

Tonight’s Topic: “The Importance of Telling Your Story with PTSD, TBI, MST, and other Invisible Disabilities!”

There are many experiences which can cause someone to develop PTSD and I believe that the more we can tell our stories, the less power they will hold over us.

One avenue to unclogging this bottleneck might be the simple act of telling one’s story, according to mental health practitioners. If you are afflicted with PTSD, then telling your story allows the brain to make new connections to that memory. You are not only attaching words to your experience, but you are attaching the feelings and sensory impressions that you felt at the time. And in doing so, the stuck part of the brain can finally stand down. It will realize that the danger is not happening. It can stop firing as if you’re in immediate danger.

There are options in how to share this experience. You can speak it aloud to an audience. You can write it out on paper. Or you can use WFL virtual group support to tell you story without judgment or stigma. Whatever form you use, the aim is to make sense of what was likely a chaotic experience in which you were helpless or continue to feel the pain.

If and how you decide to share your trauma memories is a very personal choice, and you have to choose carefully those you entrust with this part of yourselve. When you do choose to tell your story to someone you trust, there are many benefits that may await you. Find out tonight what those are.
