The definitive answer: It depends.
Top three reasons I'm armed.
_My wife and I conceal carry 5 shot .38 p+ for personal protection. Also loaded with snake shot if I'm cutting firewood in areas with venomous snakes, or potentially rabid small varmints. The weapons are small, easily concealed, and fit in out vehicle gun safes if we can't take the weapons inside somewhere.
_Recreation hunt feral pigs -- .45 for my "Uh-Oh" backup gun, or to put down horses and cattle if I'm away from my captive bolt stun gun.
_Varmint hunt coyotes raiding my goat herds a prefer a 5.56 x 45mm 75 grain match for flat trajectory.
