Such a great piece; LT McCain hit the nail on the head...leadership comes from experience. Any flying is technically demanding... military aviation represents the pinnacle of that challenge, and (speaking from experience here) it's not a world that suffers mistakes. If an officer's only experience is that viewed through his own canopy, it may be impossible for them to relate to the experiences of others; communities where resources are harder to come by, where training is focused on different skills sets, or where risk is managed in altogether divergent ways. The Navy gets a lot wrong, but it's right about one thing... our flyers are (supposed to be) officers first, aviators second.

interesting read CW5 Jack Cardwell although I hate to admit it, looks like the Air Force could take a few lessons from the Navy.
