Yeah they/we did. They were the ripple soled DMS boots everyone got in boot camp. Worst pieces of crap ever but on a GI’s feet. Barely wider than the foot in them, turning an ankle was always a problem. Far from the need for repairs in the field, those POS couldn’t really be repaired at all. Grinding and gluing a new heel on was the most you could do. They were really meant to be worn til worn out and replaced with a new pair. Great in combat, but hell on a peacetime clothing allowance of about $25/yr. I threw my two boot camp pair away when I deployed to Vietnam and never wore another pair. I haunted every Cash Sales on any base I got near to find the old repairable sole boots and wore them through retirement. Funny that the Corps finally allowed optional black boots (like Danner or Matterhorn) the summer of ‘93 just before I retired.

MSgt George Cater well, that's what we get for believing the advertising. Thanks for the straight scoop.

Ha, ha CW5 Jack Cardwell and thanks for sharing "New Army Boots video" from 1960 US Army. I well remember breaking in boots like those in the middle 1970s :-)
Our black boots were not water proof; but; they were water resistant as long as the water was no higher than the lower bootlace holes :-)

Jefe I remember over the years we in the SOF community were issued some different boots, some were just civilian boots. We would normally get some kind of disclaimer when issued such as, these are field boots, do not wear them to the PX, Burger King etc... It did not matter what boot it was it would not take long that guys would wear them to somewhere the post CSM was who just so happened to hate all SF guys. This would be the first of several landslides of trouble and the boots would become off limits to even SF but slowly they would creep back. Most of the time guys would stop wearing them to the PX, Burger King or the CSM would just realize those guys are going to give him a heart attack.
