SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL It's been known to Happen throughout History. There's a Reason for the Term "Cannon Fodder". I Remember My Father a 2/2 Marine telling Me about One of His Marines was Illiterate and My Father to Write His Letters Home and Read the Replies to Him.

Lt Col Charlie Brown I served with a couple of Project 100,000 service members. Even after 20 years service, they couldn't write a complete sentence for a counseling statement. They retired as very Staff Sergeants. We respected their combat service and they were nice guys, but outside of the Army they had nothing going.

LTC Trent Klug - An older friend of mine that served as a Marine Grunt in Vietnam said that half his platoon were morons, as in couldn't read, use a map, follow instructions, etc. I didn't understand that until I found out about McNamara's 100,000. I enlisted in 1982 and you still had some of these guys trying to hang on for their 20. I'm pretty damn sure I had a 1st Sgt that was illiterate.

CPT Lawrence Cable That's crazy, but not shocking. I knew a Colonel who was a former Olympic athlete as an enlisted man who ended up living out of his car.

Relaxing the standards for the Armed Forces didn't and never has worked well. I can't say I have much use for MacNamara anyway or anything He ever did. This lowering of standards some never even finished basic others got washed out in other training. If not other problems also violations of law resulting in locking some up and sending them to prison. Almost none of them worked out.
