Thank you for the fascinating article. The accuracy can be attested by an African American Artillery Officer who was forward and was being overrun, he called fire on his location which killed a few Americans and like 100 German soldiers.

One of military problems in the civil war was the range of the artillery far exceeded maneuver, and the generals wanted tight formations when attacking.
