The Magic Flute - Queen of the Night aria (Mozart; Diana Damrau, The Royal Opera)

“CAN YOU DESIGN AN SUV FOR AN ARIA?”

Have you seen this new Volvo commercial? Maybe. Have you wondered about the music in the commercial? Probably not. No worries. It’s the aria, "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" ("Hell's vengeance boils in my heart") sung by the Queen of the Night, in Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute (1791). It’s one of opera's most well known arias and is considered to be a most difficult piece to sing. As with all opera, in my opinion, you must listen to a lot of what you don’t care to hear in order to hear just a few seconds of the good stuff!
Basically, the queen tells her daughter that if she doesn’t kill the high priest, she’ll disown her and curse her. Nice mom.
