Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the November 21st edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "The Butterfly Nebula from Hubble." It is often a joy to hear from old friends, and today's Hubble shot of the Butterfly Nebula (NGC 6302) is certainly one such occasion. This image uses a bit of a different color palatte: blue for oxygen, green for hydrogen, and red for nitrogen. The Butterfly Nebula is a planetary nebula, formed by gases shed from the atmosphere of a central star. It lies about 3,500 light years away in the constellation Scorpio.
