The Pentagon is right in their thinking, here. Commanders already have the tools to fight extremism - and they HAVE had them for years.

Additionally, adding an "extremism" article is problematic, unless it is very tightly defined. This would open up political prosecutions which would be very, VERY bad for the military. I have seen any number of people on this very site imply that merely voting for Trump makes someone an extremist. I have seen a couple people state outright that anyone who supports Trump is a white supremacist (which would arguably full under an extremism article).

If "extremism" is allowed to be stretched in this manner, the entire military is prone to purges every 4- 8 years. And I don't think I really have to explain to anyone on this site how disastrous that would be.
