There are so many unsung heroes from WW2. Unfortunately a lot of heir stories died with them. My dad and uncles all fought in WW2 My dad was an Army mechanic. He told us of fighter aircragt limping in with jugs shot off of their rotary engines. I wish that I had talked more to him about the war but he didn't discuss it much. I'm just as bad about discussing Nam with my kids.

He had an interesting military career. I didn't know any RAF squadrons or flyers were absorbed by US forces.

All three RAF Eagle Squadrons became the 4th FG. The AVG in China became the 23d FG.

Now that takes some guts to kneel on the wing while he bellies the plane in a field. I am sure flight school didn't teach how to do that?

No doubt. He didn't want to be trapped in the cockpit and captured.
