That was in the 1940's and was called the winter war. The terrain and weather really made it hard for the Russians. Also the Fins knew the area very well and used the snow cover very well ... their snipers were outstanding. Also what helped was that Stalin had decimated most of the leadership in the Russian Army.

This is now a war of attrition and who has the better logistics. Raw nerve and fighting spirt is not enough. The Russian attacks in the spring were held to the roads due to the fields and overall terrain being a quagmire of mud, not so now that region is now entering the dryer summer months. Now more than ever, Ukraine needs NATO's help and support. We can not Pussyfoot around.
