It's a dangerous business training for war.

Yes it is and it begins with leaders; guidance, preparations, rehearsals, discipline, no short cuts, and maintenance. Accidents happen but negligence is inexcusable.

Agree. A classmate and I were born on the same day & yr. I entered the Air Force before he did as I was not in college. He went on to graduate from college, was commissioned & went to flight school abd qualified for jets (not sure but may have been a F102). His plane malfunctioned & crashed on a cross country flight to his home area. He did not Eject, but opted opted to keep his plane from hitting a home or populated area. Heroism is not only displayed on the battlefield. As an aside, his parents were German & were allowed to immigrate right after WWII. He was their first born.

We can make it really safe but then it isn't much use as realistic training and a lot more people would die in war.

Well PO1 Tony Holland to be honest:
1. I think it is hopeful news that more service members die in training that in wartime.
a. That means the training and equipping of service members and weapons systems in combat is successful.
b. the medical triage system in combat theaters is top notch.
2. Training for combat needs to be realistic as possible. Simulations can assist; but, stressful and realistic training is critical to individual and squad level and higher organization training.
3. It is always better to fail in training than to fail in combat.
4. In WWII and the Korean war and in the Vietnam War more service members were killed in theater than in training in CONUS. I don't think anybody with a sane mind would want to go back to that time.
5. Compare how many people die on the roads on this nation to military service member deaths.
