LTC (Join to see) Open borders really have no impact on drug and human trafficking smugglers. Way back before 9/11 I received a briefing from the Port of Tampa on security changes coming to Florida ports. They had discovered that cruise ships were a major source of both drug and human trafficking smuggling, and the state was tightening port access. I got this briefing because our company was in the Port of Tampa and changes coming would directly affect us. Those changes were on the books, but not implemented, when 9/11 happened and actually served as the model for the post 9/11 port security changes for the entire country. Bottom line, the cartels and smugglers have always preferred traditional ports of entry over risking illegally crossing into the US.
