MY SAY: Two schools of thought here. One, this acts as intimidation, influencing enemies of ours and our allies. Two, without a mission and purpose beyond a presence you tax the resources needed for victory. The enemy can wait out your 6 or 9 month deployment.

Another school of thought. The Pacific is our current high threat focus and we have No carriers in it out on patrol for the next 3 weeks due to this. The US always does the same reactions - so the Iranians lured us to place 2 carriers there by pounding the table louder.
Whats more troubling is in the Red Sea... GRU has been seen with the Houthis - which means they have advanced Russian naval missiles now. Iran has them as well.
