He should have got a silver star.
Here's an example of female who got a silver star in an ambush. She was also an Aational Guard soldier.

I'm not surprised he only got a Bronze Star with V. There is a bias against Guard Soldiers when it comes to valor awards.

In each case these were soldiers doing exactly what they were trained (and expected) to do. The difference is how well someone pushed an award up the chain of command.
