The 75th Infantry Regiment has a proud history. Their 1st and 2nd Battalions of Rangers are the best at what they do. Then LTC Earl Rudder led his 2nd Battalion in scaling the cliffs at Point du Hoc overlooking the beaches at Normandy. Of his 800-man battalion, fewer than half reached the summit. LTC Rudder received the Distinguished Service Cross after that battle and was promoted to Colonel. When the war ended, he returned to his hometown in Texas and went back to teaching agriculture and math at the local high school. He remained in the Texas National Guard and closed out his career as a Major General and President of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (Texas A&M College). In 1961, I was a student there and member of the Corps of Cadets and served as Corps Bugler. I was honored to shake the General’s hand one Saturday afternoon after drill . General Rudder passed away after a major heart attack when he was only 70 years old. His memory lives on at Texas A&M, with a major boulevard in College Station named in his honor.
