SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL This is an optional procedure, not brought on by military service so I don't think the V.A. has any obligation to do gender reassignment.

No VA should be doing massive gender reassignment surgeries and the lower procedure should absolutely be sent outside. Just because someone says they should do it do you overnight have surgical teams with this skill level and nurses with post surgical skill level. I have been an RN for 19 years and have no idea how to care for bottom surgeries nor do I have the experience with the behavioral health issues that would be involved. I have the skills to help set something up but to have a quality team for one facility I think we are looking at 2-3 years minimum.

As it stands today most PCO's have no idea how to deal with Trans health issues. Top surgeries are easily handled but skill is needed for bottom surgeries depending on method used. Frankly I would not allow a VA surgeon to work in that area on me. So bottom surgeries should be sent out to surgeons who specializes in this surgery.

The VA doesn't owe them anything just because they think that they are something other than the way they were born.
