APOD: 2022 April 30 - M44: The Beehive Cluster

We are now caught up with today's APOD: "M44: The Beehive Cluster." Located only 600 light years away in the constellation Cancer, Charles Messier added the Beehive Cluster to his catalogue in 1769. Galileo first studied M44 in 1609, and was able to resolve some 40 stars (the cluster contains approximately 1,000 stars). The Latin name for the Beehive Cluster is 'Praesepe' (manger). Why? Ancient Greeks and Romans saw this object as a manger from which fed the donkeys ridden by Dionysos and Silenus as they set off to battle the Titans.
