Okay my friend Lt Col Charlie Brown I expect this should have read "Israel recently tested a laser weapon system that successfully knocked drones, mortar [round]s and rockets' since mortars are small indirect fire artillery pieces.
1. In August 1980 I completed Infantry Mortar Platoon Officer Course as Fort Benning, Georgia and served as a Mortar platoon OIC during live fire exercises, including dealing with hang fires and dud rounds.
2. In the 1990's I was part of a team assisting the Israel Air Force on a USAF FMS contract.

Israel's new laser missile defense system has successfully intercepted mortars, rockets and anti-tank missiles in recent tests, Defense Minister Benny Gantz said Thursday.
The Israeli-made laser system, designed to complement a series of aerial defense systems such as the costly Iron Dome deployed by Israel, will be operational “as soon as possible,” Gantz said.

Israel has successfully tested the new "Iron Beam" laser interception system against UAVs, mortars, and rockets.
This the world’s first energy-based weapons system, that has now proven to actually work, according to the Israeli defense force

I am chomping at the bit to see it actually does work! Can you imagine? Ensign lock Phasers and commence fires! Woohoo. LTC Stephen F.

I’m not all that familiar with mortars, but aren’t they like 40mm? Half a pack of regular cigarettes, my phone, a sledge hammer. That’s an amazing target hit, something so small. It like shooting at a fat bullet!

The flight paths of mortars Artillery and as well as most everything that flies through the air can bee seen by todays radar capabilities in most nations militaries. We use these systems for counter battery fires and anti aircraft fires, but the munitions are expensive. Some more sensitive systems can see and track a sparrow. And if the frequency is tuned properly can cook it in flight as well.

MSG Roy Cheever - yup, my phone is bigger. That’s pretty amazing. I was a radar tech (ETR 3, ETR 2) when I first came in and we were lucky to see small boats in the open ocean.
In Asian seas people fish with small floating lobster pots in the middle of the ocean. Obviously they wouldn’t hurt us if we ran over one, but it’s just not a good thing to run over someone’s method of making a living. It’s call poor seamanship. I had managed to pick up a small Japanese made radar system similar to the ones we put in landing craft (only $6k) and hooked it up with a display on the bridge. That commercial off the shelf system outperformed the big systems on small targets mostly because it was much more modern, and they didn’t go down like a big one.
