Zooming in on the heart of the Milky Way
This zoom video sequence starts with a broad view of the Milky Way. We then dive into the dusty central region to take a much closer look. There lurks a 4-mi...
The shear density of stars, gases, and dust is amazing Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!!! ...And to be able to see 26,700 light years distant is also extremely incredible! Outstanding APOD again today, Bill!
As I did in my comment yesterday, I am adding an adjunct video, which takes the viewer to the heart of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is fundamentally the galactic center... It is amazing to take this video trip, and the density of stars is mind blowing for lack of a better choice of words... As usual, Major, the APODs you share with us lead each of us down another astronomical path in space!!! Thank you...
Here is the link: https://youtu.be/Da_Wc_G9ms4
This should be watched FULL SCREEN WITH MODERATE SOUND...

The Church - Under The Milky Way
Music video by The Church performing Under The Milky Way. (C) 1988 Arista Records Inc.
Thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for Monday, April 19. 2021 entitled "The Galactic Center in Infrared."
Image: The Galactic Center in Infrared - Image Credit - NASA, JPL-Caltech, Spitzer Space Telescope, Susan Stolovy (SSC-Caltech) et al.; Reprocessing - Judy Schmidt
The 'center" of the galaxy is vast and seems to be 900 light years wide - give or take.
Statisticians understand mean, median, mode, standard deviation, etc.
The center of the Milky Way is rotating on its own axis :-)
APOD Background
"Explanation: What does the center of our galaxy look like? In visible light, the Milky Way's center is hidden by clouds of obscuring dust and gas. But in this stunning vista, the Spitzer Space Telescope's infrared cameras, penetrate much of the dust revealing the stars of the crowded galactic center region. A mosaic of many smaller snapshots, the detailed, false-color image shows older, cool stars in bluish hues. Red and brown glowing dust clouds are associated with young, hot stars in stellar nurseries. The very center of the Milky Way has recently been found capable of forming newborn stars. The galactic center lies some 26,700 light-years away, toward the constellation Sagittarius. At that distance, this picture spans about 900 light-years."
