Stone circles have been constructed throughout history for many different reasons. The best known tradition of stone circle construction occurred across the British Isles and Brittany in the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, and include examples such as Stonehenge and the Duddo Five Stones. Located in Northumberland (UK, about 4 miles from the Scottish Border), the site was known as the Four Stones until 1903, when the fifth stone was re-erected to improve the skyline. Archeologists believe there were seven stones originally, as empty sockets for two stones were found nearby during excavation of the site in the 1890s.

Overlooking the Duddo Stone Circle is the planet Mars. This image was captured in October 2020 when the Red Planet was closest to Earth. It is still visible at sunset, but will appear lower in the horizon as summer approaches.

Wonderful juxtaposition of Mars and a section of the heavens created by God over the Duddo Stone Circle' of Northumberland, England created by man millennia ago :-)

APOD background
Explanation: Why are these large stones here? One the more famous stone circles is the Duddo Five Stones of Northumberland, England. Set in the open near the top of a modest incline, a short hike across empty fields will bring you to unusual human -sized stones that are unlike anything surrounding them. The grooved, pitted, and deeply weathered surfaces of the soft sandstones are consistent with being placed about 4000 years ago -- but placed for reasons now unknown. The featured image -- a composite of two consecutive images taken from the same location -- was captured last October under a starry sky when the Earth was passing near Mars, making the red planet unusually large and bright. Mars remains visible at sunset, although increasingly close to the horizon over the next few months.
