APOD: 2021 January 5 - The Small Cloud of Magellan

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "The Small Cloud of Magellan." Looks like another image from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), doesn't it? This exposure was actually produced by amateur astrophotographer José Mtanous (I'll post his equipment list in a separate comment). We are looking at the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (on the right). The SMC is about 15,000 light years across and lies 200,000+ light years from Earth. 47 Tucanae is much closer (only about 13,000 light years away). Both are regular night sky features in the Southern Hemisphere. You would need to be standing at or below the Earth's equator to be able to observe either for any length of time.
