Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Tagging Bennu." As you can see from the featured image, the October 20th touch-and-go (TAG) event planned for the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft and Asteroid Bennu was successful. This all happened some 200 million miles (321 million km) away from Earth. The sampling event brought the spacecraft all the way down to sample site Nightingale, touching down within three feet (one meter) of the targeted location. The spacecraft’s sampling arm – called the Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) – is visible here. The round head at the end of TAGSAM is the only part of OSIRIS-REx that contacted the surface during the sample collection event. Controllers are now assessing if they collected sufficient material during this activity, and if so, will send commands to OSIRIS-REx to 'take the rest of the day off' and head home. The planned arrival back on Earth of the material from Asteroid Bennu is in 2023.

"Explanation: On October 20, after a careful approach to the boulder-strewn surface, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft's arm reached out and touched asteroid Bennu. Dubbed a Touch-And-Go (TAG) sampling event, the 30 centimeter wide sampling head (TAGSAM) appears to crush some of the rocks in this snapshot. The close-up scene was recorded by the spacecraft's SamCam some 321 million kilometers from planet Earth, just after surface contact. One second later, the spacecraft fired nitrogen gas from a bottle intended to blow a substantial amount of Bennu's regolith into the sampling head, collecting the loose surface material. Data show the spacecraft spent approximately 5 more seconds in contact with Bennu's Nightingale sample site and then performed its back-away burn. Timelapse frames from SamCam reveal the aftermath."
