General Ridgeway is considered the general that saved Korea. He took command a week before the N Korean and Chinese offensive. He visited the front and found confusion at the front and Division Commanders whose plans were to retreat. As the war progressed he replaced all the Division Commanders with generals who wanted to fight. He was also a soldier's general. He remember 5,000 names of soldiers he met. He ordered warmer uniforms and improved the food.
His forces were North of Seoul but were pushed back to the South of Seoul by the enemy offensive. He conducted a recon to include a map recon. He used his photographic memory to memorize terrain features like hills, ridges, spurs, creeks, roads, and rivers. This gave him the ability to know what kind of terrain his divisions would face. He created Phase Lines based on the terrain and walked his divisions in a potent counterattack.
