Good afternoon, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Novel Coronavirus Attacks Humanity." I guess it does look a little space alien-ish. You are looking at a colorized scanning electron micrograph of an apoptotic cell (green) heavily infected with SARS-COV-2 virus particles (orange). An apoptotic cell is one that is in the process of programmed cell death (for one reason or another). It is a natural process, and triggers macrophages within the body to come clean up the remains. The Kung Flu represses the repair function and defense ability of lung macrophages, which from what I've read contributes much to the resulting respiratory symptoms and acute lung damage. The image captured at the Integrated Research Facility (IRF) in Fort Detrick, Maryland. Guess it was a slow day for the APOD Team after last night's Crew Dragon party.
