Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Color the Universe." This 1888 illustration, appearing on page 163 of a book by Camille Flammarion, is certainly ripe for interpretation. The caption (Fr.) for the illustration is "Un missionnaire du moyen age raconté qu'il avait trouvé le point ou le ciel et la Terre se touchent" (A medieval missionary told that he had found the point where the sky and the Earth touch). Flammarion, a French astronomer, wrote in 1880: "if humankind...knew what profound inner pleasure await those who gaze at the heavens, then France, nay, the whole of Europe, would be covered with telescopes instead of bayonets, thereby promoting universal happiness and peace."
