Good morning and Happy Fiscal New Year, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) video clip (2:40) is titled "Black Hole Safety Video." We are introduced to a one-eyed astronaut monster who wishes to visit a black hole. The closest known black hole to the Earth is V616 Mon, which is about 3,300 light years away. The best way for our monster friend to stay safe, the video informs, is to not go too close.

I remember a great passage from one of Stephen Hawkings' books, about all the terrible things that would happen to a physicist who attempted to enter a black hole. It went on at some length, then concluded that a physicist would, of course, never try such a thing. He would send a grad student.
I passed that along to my youngest son who was working on a PhD at the time (in poly sci, not physics), and he posted it on the wall in his tiny office.
