I work with troubled youth in a TeamMates program. I know several kids like this and they are all good kids that are products of their environment. Great post Col-
This is the program. It was started by Coach Tom Osborn while he was still coaching. He required his players to mentor a kid. It has spread across Nebraska and into Iowa recently. I have been involved since 2007 and I have mentored three kids. I always get the hard case/gang kids because I am a little harder and place expectations on them- the military thing is another reason. My kid first was in 5th grade and already had a huge rap sheet. He spent a few years in and out of juvenile detention, but is now working and a productive member of society. The second just never had the gumption to do much of anything other than smoke weed and stare at the wall. I am still with the third and he is a good kid in a bad bad world.
