In early 2012, my Civil Affairs Unit went to an exercise in Hawaii. We spent time at Camp Shafter and Schofield Barracks. The day before the exercise, we were told we could take the day off. Here is what happened. We promoted an E-6 to E-7 on back of the USS Missouri and we went to visit the USS Arizona and the USS Bowfin. Awesome Photos LTC (Join to see)! My Uncle’s name is on a tablet at the Pearl Harbor Memorial. He was a dive bomber during the Battle of Midway; part of Squadron 6

SPC Nancy Greene
According to my family’s history, his bomb was the first to hit Yamamoto’s ship. My Dad and 5 of his 6 brothers all served during WWII. My Uncle was 20 during the Battle of Midway. In the most recent movie, his name is actually on the ‘board’ in the room where the pilots are being briefed prior to that mission. This is my Uncle: Ensign Eugene A Greene and the destroyer escort named in his honor.LTC (Join to see)

SPC Nancy Greene Awesome Legacy, the ship was sold to Spain in the early 1970s and was not sunk until December of 1991.

Spectacular story and photos, SPC Nancy Greene. Thank you. I know you’re most proud of your uncle’s actions.

LTC Stephen C. I am extremely proud of his accomplishments and am working on creating his shadow box. He had no children and I am the only second generation Greene to have served in the Military. LTC Stephen C.

I’ve never been to Hawai’i for military duty, LTC (Join to see), but we’ve visited there many times. Twice, we’ve visited the Arizona Memorial. Here’s my photo from the first visit. When in Honolulu, we always stayed at The Royal Hawaiian (aka the Pink Palace) on Waikiki Beach, which is where the US Navy submariners were billeted during WWII! My father served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. However, since he wasn’t a submariner, he stayed next door at the Moana. These two hotels are the the original hotels on Waikiki Beach, and both are magnificent!

CWO3 Dennis M. - I was stationed at Hickam AFB, Hi for three years from 1971 to 1974. That was NOT a hardship. I had been there before in the early 1950s with my Mom and Dad as a Military Dependent when My Dad while in the US Navy was stationed a Peral Harbor Navel Station for three years. Add it all up got to spend 6 years in Hawaii.

Pearl Harbor Navel Base, Ford Island on right with not only the Arizona Memorial but the ship viable under the water from this viewpoint. The ship anchored above it is the battleship, USS Missouri on which the WWII surrender of the Japanese was signed. During the early 1970s when i was stationed at Hickham AFB, HI I visited the Arizona Memorial a number of times. Only a fence line separates the two bases from each other.
