Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "A Lunar Corona with Jupiter and Saturn." Lunar coronae are formed by the diffraction of light around similarly-sized droplets or ice crystals contained in (mostly transparent) clouds. Here, we have a lunar corona, Saturn, and Jupiter highlighting a view outside Pieve di Cadore (68 miles north of Venice) in the Cadore Dolomite region of Italy. Judging by the position of Saturn and Jupiter (and the Moon), this composite image was taken around December 15th in the early evening. You can mouse over the picture on the APOD page and see the different annotated features.

Great photo. Saw something like that around the moon once but never around the others.

Wonderful picture. I was so busy watching the two planets and getting them in the binoculars that I don't even remember the moon. We could, however, just see the bulge of Saturn's rings.
