4 July 1863: Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton surrendered the Vicksburg garrison to Maj. Gen. U. S. Grant after a lengthy campaign to deny the Confederacy access to the Mississippi River.
The victory also paved the way for Lincoln to move Grant to the eastern theater to face Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Arthur MacArther received a MOH when he seized the colors of his regiment at a critical moment and planted them on the captured works on the crest of Missionary Ridge. The Battle of Missionary Ridge, also known as the Battle of Chattanooga, was fought on November 25, 1863, as part of the Chattanooga campaign of the American Civil War.
