Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the December 5th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD):"Pleiades: The Seven Sisters Star Cluster." The Pleiades (aka M45) are visible for most of the night in the northern hemisphere now. But not with this kind of clarity. Today's APOD was captured over the course of 11 hours by the Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. The observatory is perched at ~3,800 feet above sea level near Coonabarabran in New South Wales.
The dust cloud and reflection nebula gives this image an almost magical appearance. In Greek mythology, the Pleiades are the seven companions of Artemis, goddess of the Hunt. The Titan Atlas and Oceanid Pleione were their parents.
